Fashion Marketing 101

Amie Pronowski
In a nutshell, fashion marketing is a profession that takes the latest trends and designs in clothing and communicates them to a target market in such a way that the consumer is not only aware of the product, but wants to and ultimately does buy the product. A target market is a sector of the consumer market to which a company wishes to sell (i.e. market) its clothing. To fully know what fashion marketing is, it is important to understand that marketing does not stop at ads in magazines or commercials on TV. The world of marketing is just as dynamic as the world of fashion. Marketing clothing includes elements such as determining which stores the apparel should be sold in, what price the clothing should be sold for—all the way to how the in-store displays should look. Fashion marketers often are as savvy about business as they are about fashion and popular culture.

Fashion marketers are creative. At the core, the profession is about connecting with the image—the lifestyle—the consumer wants. For example, in the fashion industry, comfort, style, material, color, symmetry, and usability are just the beginning of a list of elements designers must consider when developing a line of clothing. Fashion marketers take the task a step further by determining the best way to promote the characteristics of the clothing to the consumer and to which group of consumers to promote it to. What a 65 year-old female is looking for from a piece of formal eveningwear is completely different from what a 21 year-old male wants from casual everyday wear. Consequently, fashion marketers must stay abreast with the latest fashions as well as know what styles will be successful for a variety of occasions, age groups and demographics.

Fashion marketers play an essential role within the fashion industry because they are the link between designers and the public. The success of a line of clothing does not rest solely on its design. Often, successful marketing is just as crucial, if not more so, to the line as the actual clothing itself. This is because marketing is the tool through which the designer identifies with the public, and the public identifies with the designer. Without this exchange, it would be difficult to establish the consumer base required to have a successful line of clothing.

The Power Of Color In Business

Linda Thomas
THERE IS POWER IN YOUR CLOSET and it is in the color of your clothes. All people have physiological response to color. The following chart is to be used to dress appropriately for what you wane to achieve. Assuming your closer is already filled with favorites where every item fits you perfectly (for the body as it honestly is today), look to the colors you choose to give you the extra impact to make all your goals a slam dunk!

For businesswomen, the most effective colors are charcoal grey and navy blue. Even though spring is here and bright colors are in fashion, there is power in the colors we sometimes think of as boring or just for winter. When you are dealing with money, people and legal matters, your clients or prospects want to be reassured that you are dependable, trustworthy and focused on the matters at hand. The darker the shade of every color, the more down to earth and reliable you appear. Greys project authority. Blues project trust. Darken these two colors and you can see why they are so effective when you go to a meeting to sign a contract, discuss a raise or promotion, or deal with lawyers and bankers.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the lighter a shade is, the softer your impact is on others. If you are a leader on a project, in your company or an association, your purpose is not always to be in the limelight. There are times you need to gather information while NOT drawing attention to yourself. There are times you need to deliver hard news, conduct an exit interview or deal with an emotionally changed group of people. Pastel blue, soft yellows and light pinks will help you visually soothe the people you could be at odds with. These are situations when you do not wear red. Red is known as "the" power color, but here is the reasoning behind that. When we see red, our blood pressure increases slightly, as does our brain activity. What red is great for is when you are giving a presentation and you want people to remember what you said. Wearing red helps others more easily retain your message because their brain activity is in a heightened state.

So many women have closets with an overabundance of black clothes. We rend to think it hides our flaws and/or extra weight. It can, but black does more than that. It is a great networking color among others in leadership positions. Yet when we are with subordinates, head-¬to-toe black can be seen as a wall around the authority figure that can stop the flow of open communication. People can see you as the leader (when you wear black), but may not volunteer feedback, insight or information if they do not want to challenge you as the leader. "She can handle it," may be the prevailing attitude as others remain in the background watching you handle the hard tasks. If you are a manager and your department is not forthcoming with you, you may be overwhelming them with the black in your wardrobe. Medium shades of any other color will draw others to you when you want more interaction.

Fashion With A Conscience

Annabelle Randles
While wristbands have become a fashionable way to show our geopolitics we often forget that we can make an even bigger impact on poverty and the environment through the clothes we choose. Wearing eco fashion is one way we all can make a real difference. Organic cotton is one of the best examples of how each one of us can influence third world economies by encouraging fairer trade while helping preserve the environment.

A few weeks ago G8 leaders failed to set a date to end their agricultural export subsidies. While Western consumers enjoy low price clothing, they often forget that it hardly reflects the true cost of fashion. Conventional cotton is highly subsidised in countries such as the US and China. According to Oxfam, the US pays three times more in subsidies to its 25,000 cotton farmers than its budget for aid to Africa's 500 million people. These subsidies make it impossible for third world countries to compete on international markets resulting in lower export earnings and even costing some countries more than they receive in debt relief.

Beyond economics, conventional cotton production has also many negative environmental impacts. While it is often described as the "Natural Fibre", cotton requires more pesticides and insecticides than any other crops. According to PAN UK (Pesticide Action Network) cotton accounts for 10% of all pesticides and 22.5% of insecticides applied in agriculture. It takes 1/3 of a pound of pesticides to produce a single tee shirt. The same pesticides and insecticides that are linked to cancer are being sprayed onto field affecting farmers, health as well as the wildlife and the environment.

The “Make Poverty History” campaign has had tremendous success in raising the awareness of many issues facing the developing world. Yet fashion produced in environmentally friendly and under fair-trade conditions still represents only a tiny fraction of the global textile market. However, with exciting new labels and designers, eco-fashion has developed a stylish and contemporary look in keeping with our modern lifestyles.

10 Online Shoe Shopping Tips

Eve Carmichael
Tip #1 - Know Your Feet.

The best way to buy shoes that will fit your feet properly is to take their shape into consideration. Do you feet spill out of the sides of most shoe styles? Then try wide-width shoes.

Do you have a problem with gapping on the sides of your shoes? Perhaps a narrow-width shoes will help.

Are your toes short and stubby? Then pointy shoes might not be right for you. Considering the shape of your feet will help you buy great fitting shoes almost every time.

Tip #2 - Take a Hint From the Shoes You Already Own.

Take your favorite pair of shoes and study them. Ask yourself why they fit your foot so well. Is it because the toe is square instead of pointy? Is the material soft and has molded to the shape of your foot?

Once you know why your best fitting pair of shoes fit so well, find shoes that have a similar design or are made from similar materials, and you shouldn't have too many problems ordering great fitting shoes online.

Tip #3 - Find a Designer Whose Shoes Work For Your.

Most shoe manufacturers and designers tend to cut their shoes consistently. Compile a list of shoe manufactures that make shoes that fit your feet well, and search their online stock for that next great pair of pumps.

Etienne Aigner is one of the shoe manufacturers on my "list", and whenever I search online for a new pair of shoes, I see what they offer first. Nine times out of ten, their shoes fit my feet like a glove (or perhaps I should say they fit like a sock).

Tip #4 - Are Cheap Shoes Really a Bargain?

Everyone loves a bargain, but are you really saving money by buying those $39.95 pleather pumps that hurt your feet and looked trashed after only wearing them a few times. Instead of buying cheap shoes for little money, its better to buy quality shoes on sale. With proper care, quality shoes will feel and look good for years.

Tip #5 - Try On In a Store then Buy Online.

I love to scout out a great pair of shoes at the local mall and them buy them online for less. No tax, and free shipping will make almost any pair of shoes cheaper if you buy it online.

Tip #6 - Shop at Reputable Online Shoe Stores.

Make sure to buy from reputable online shoe merchants that have clearly marked return policies and secure web sites.

Tip #7 - Read Online Shoe Reviews.

Many web sites feature product reviews written by customers. Shoe Reviews will give you an idea of the fit and quality of the shoes reviewed.

Tip #8 - Keep Hosiery & Socks In Mind.

When you're buying a new pair of shoes, keep the kind of hosiery or socks you intend to wear with your new shoes in mind. For example, if you are buying a pair of boots to wear in bad weather, you might want to wear a warm, thick pair of socks with them. So buy the boots a size larger to accommodate the socks.

Tip #9 - Can You Walk in Those Heels?

If you've never worn a pair of 4 inch stiletto heeled pumps before, its best to try a pair on at a brick and mortar store before you buy them on line.

Tip #10 - Don't Spend More Then You Can Afford.

Just because those $325 dollar Bruno Magli Nazli Pumps are just a click and a credit card away, don't spend more than you can afford. Believe me, I know how addictive online shoe shopping can be!

Follow these ten easy online shoe shopping tips, and you'll be shoe shopping online like a pro. Best of all, you'll rarely, if ever, have to return a pair of shoes you bought online again.

Choosing Jewlery

Jeff Lakie
People have enjoyed jewelry throughout history. It has been given as gifts and as a symbol of relationships. It is not only a beautiful accessory, it helps identify a person. Jewelry can be a very expensive investment so making a wise decision on your jewelry purchase is important to make sure the jewelry is of a good quality and (most importantly) that the recipient is happy.

How to select diamonds

When you're selecting diamonds there are four things that diamonds are measured on. These are called the 4 C's of diamonds:

Cut. This refers to the shape of the diamond, which will determine how much it sparkles when the light hits it. Carat. This is how big the diamond is. Clarity. This measures how clear the diamond is. That is, if it has flaws (called inclusions) or not. Color. This is the measurement of how white or yellow a diamond is.

Caring for your jewelry

Taking care of your jewelry is just as important as the decisions you made when you went to purchase it. For example, be sure to keep it clean as dirt will gouge the jewelry. Clean it very carefully with a soft cloth, or get it professionally cleaned at a jewelry store. Having clean jewelry is very important for its longevity but also, since jewelry is often worn on some of the most sensitive parts of the body, dirty jewelry can cause irritation.

Keeping your jewelry safe

Store your jewelry in a safe place. For example, you may want to buy a safe, or utilize a hidden safe which looks like a household product (like a soda can or a jar of cleaner) but has a secret compartment which thieves might not be likely to look in. Or, if you are jewelry is highly valued, you may want to even keep it in a security box at a bank.

Jewelry is an important investment in style and in your relationship! Buying jewelry wisely and keeping it clean and well maintained will help it hold its beauty and value for your lifetime and allow it to be a legacy to your children.

Tips On Pulling A Fabulous Fashion Act Together

Bridget P. Allen
Girl, are you intelligent, funny with a fab personality and an eye for the newest fashion trends but need a little help pulling it all together? Look no further, here are some tips on pulling together the right look. Your personal style speaks volumes about who you are so let's not blow it after you've spent your hard earned money on the latest new trends!

The key to putting together a great outfit is risky and simple. The rule of thumb is balance and "less is more."

Choose one "wow" item and build around it. For example, if you have this absolutely fabulous piece of jewelry that you mush show off, try wearing it with a simple black dress. Black flatters just about all figures without overwhelming the look of your jewelry.

Want to show off your new elaborately stitched jeans? A solid shirt paired with heels works well with decorated jeans. If the design on the jeans is too busy the shirt will tone it down some.

How about those new bright pink pumps? You can't go wrong by complimenting the shoes with a pair of solid black jeans and white shirt. Black jeans and solid colored shirt matches well with any brightly colored pumps.

And what about those gold sequin flats that you just couldn't pass up? Petal-pushers and a simple shirt are ideal compliments for your golden feet.

The key is to pick one item and build around it. Don't just stick with one look. Be glamour one day and urban the next.

Take the time to educate yourself on different styles. Learn how to draw inspiration from your favorite looks of past eras.

Fashion is about confidence. If you feel great in an outfit, others will feel your vibes. And if you don't feel confident, fake it! Whether you are 18 or 50, take pride in your appearance and it's important to feel comfortable in your style.

Las Vegas Wedding Fashions Turning Red

Renae C Judkins
Las Vegas has been known as a different sort of wedding town particularly for the drive through weddings, but now Las Vegas weddings are starting to be known again for something else.

Brides getting married in Las Vegas are starting to style their wedding dresses after the fabulous Sin City ... literally.

Red is the new color for brides to wear while walking down the aisle in Las Vegas. Most brides who choose to wear red are wearing wine red corsets with white, flowing, layered skirts. Some of the skirts even have detailed red on it: red sequins, red jewels, or even red ribbons.

Las Vegas wedding fashions may never be the same. Grooms are already dressing in red to match their brides dresses. But even more shocking is that someone else will be wearing the white?

It is fast becoming a custom in Las Vegas for the brides maids to wear the white while the Las Vegas bride sports the red. Though the brides maids dresses don't look like wedding dresses, it is exceptional to note that brides definitely stand out with their red wedding dresses.

Many Las Vegas brides have found their red wedding dresses online, but others have had them custom made. Custom wedding dress makers are far from scarce in Las Vegas.

Also surprisingly enough, these custom dresses usually aren't overpriced and are quite affordable to make a lady in red. Depending on the dress maker, a deep red Las Vegas wedding dress can run between $500 to $2,000.

While Las Vegas brides continue to peruse the Las Vegas strip with their bridal party, they now match the strip a little better, but stand out twice as much.

The Politics Of Fashion

Kingston Amadan
Everyone knows that clothes make the man. From the executive suits that litter Wall Street like the remnants of a ticker-tape parade to the coveralls and work boots worn by construction workers and mechanics, clothes tell the story of who we are and where we're going. Even when the workday is done, what we choose to wear on our own time is still a reflection of our personalities. From the sweat-suit to the wet-suit, our clothes are meant to be not only functional, but forthcoming as well. Clothes tell others what we like, and often, how we spend our time. Sports franchise logos are constantly on display on Main Street America. T-shirts with well known television, film and music icons can be seen almost anywhere. Clothes have something to say, and people are beginning to realize that the responsibility of being a walking billboard requires us to choose wisely.

Now, more than ever, politics are entering the realm of fashion. Blatantly political phrases and slogans are becoming more prevalent on the backs of the public than the bumpers of cars. There are even items of clothing that advertise specific candidates or political parties and were actually purchased by someone, somewhere (not obtained as a door prize at a party fundraiser). But what options exist for those who like a little subtlety with their agenda? Enter the merger of socially conscious art and clothing. Less politically charged and infinitely more fashionable, boutique clothiers have created garments that are the realization of the finite balance between the message and the medium. Using art as the instrument of exchange and clothing as the canvas, these pioneers of significancy are providing people with a method of expressing themselves both in figure and in fact. What better way for entrepreneurs to meet the demands of a public that is focused on reflecting a belief in both style and substance.

6 Top Fashion Tips To Cultivate Your Charisma

Deborah Torres Patel
Have you ever wondered how celebrities manage to appear so radiant? Or how they exude an indescribable extra something that makes them magnetic? In this article I will share six easy ways to help you cultivate your own charismatic style and presentation by following simple yet timeless fashion tips.

1. Interview friends, family or colleagues who will give you an honest opinion or engage an image consultant to determine what colors & styles best suit you and are in harmony with your natural features like your skin tone, eye and hair color.

2. Colors- A way to test if your colors are harmonious is to look into a mirror in natural daylight while holding a piece of clothing/fabric next to your eyes or directly underneath your chin. Notice which stands out more - the color or your features.

Colors that are "right" put the focus on you and not the garment. For example, if you have ocean blue eyes, wearing the same or complimentary blue color will make your eyes stand out and people may comment about how well you look.

A color that is "wrong" often makes you look dull, drains your energy, can be repulsive to you or may even cast a slight shadow on your face. If you are wearing colors that aren't good for you, people may remark that you look tired or ill even if you feel fine.

If this color testing seems foreign, don't worry. With practice you will begin to experience the subtlety of how colors can influence your mood and instantly make you look and feel more attractive.

3. Prints should be in proportion to your feature size based on your body's natural geometry. For example, if you have small to medium size features, you should wear small to medium size patterns and jewelry.

4. Shapes - The shape of your face and your features should determine the shapes of your accessories and print designs. If you have an oval face, you can wear oval earrings, necklines, belt buckles and eyeglasses. Most of us are a variety of shapes so we are able to combine them. For example, you may have oval eyes, a teardrop nose and a square chin. Again, it is helpful to look into a mirror or at a recent photograph of yourself to objectively determine which shapes you inherently possess.

5. Layering can make you more prepared for social situations. For example, you will rarely be disrespected for being slightly overdressed. When you wear layers, you can always take off a jacket, tie, scarf or jewelry to occur less formal.

Before an important meeting ask questions in advance about clothing guidelines. If you are doing a sales presentation or public speaking, dress "a cut above" what your audience is expected to wear. For example, if the dress code is casual, go smart or business casual.

Again, you can always roll up your sleeves to appear more relaxed. But if are male and show up to a meeting with short sleeves and no jacket and all other men are dressed in collared shirts with long sleeves, you will be at a disadvantage before you even open your mouth.

6. Culturally Appropriate - In today's global environment we always need to be aware of what is ethnically suitable. Especially if you will be traveling to a new region, it is wise to do an internet search, ask your travel agent or someone living in the location you will be visiting for advice on local etiquette and proper attire.

A personal fashion style can easily differentiate you from others. The fact is a positive impression can be generated even if you aren't feeling particularly charming. As long as you have a sense of who you are and wear what mirrors your native coloring and innate physical design you will convey a comfortable confidence and natural charisma.

Note ~ if you change your hair, eye or skin color or experience aging, some of the colors and styles that look good on you may change. You will need to adjust your wardrobe accordingly.

For Comfort Beauty Is Sacrificed

Hispanic
Usually worn as fetish clothing or costume nowadays since corsets fell out of fashion during the 1920s, the corset dress is usually worn to make a woman's figure more alluring and desirable by flaunting breasts, flattening the tummy, and emphasizing all its positives while hiding the negatives. A literal combination of a dress and a corset, corset dresses can be worn outdoors for costume balls and other events.

It is also called hobble corsets because it extends the length of the dress right down to the toes in a restrictive fashion. As such, women who wear these dresses may walk in a strange, limping manner, because their legs and impeded and movement is limited. It is also hard to sit down when wearing any kind of corset dresses.

A corset dress is a fashion statement that is usually expensive because more materials are used. The unique shape gives the body an instant change, lifting the breasts and reducing the waistline. The wearer look seductive.

Dress corsets have a limited audience, usually Gothic people, and so has grown to be used as fetish wear nowadays. That is, it's actually being worn by goths for sexual arousal, with the fact that its boning makes it excruciating to wear a plus for people who are into bondage, discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism (BDSM).

Take note that when a corset is worn for a long period, it soon becomes a bondage corset; that is, when it's worn as often as underwear such that a woman does about anything in a corset dress, the continuously excruciating act can be construed as bondage.

Though modern corset dresses often feature lacing and/or boning and generally mimic a historical style of corsets, they have very little if any effect on the shape of the wearer's body. That is, though they may maximize or minimize a person's figure, they're not really like the historical corsets of the past, with some available in separate corset tops and skirts while others featuring built-in corsets for upper torso support only.

Some Louis Vuitton History

JD Theis
Lets discuss Louis Vuitton for a minute. Who doesn't love Louis Vuitton? Surprisingly, however, many people do not know how Louis Vuitton became as popular as it is today. There actually was a real Louis Vuitton. He was born in 1821 in France and began working for the wealthy as a way to pay for his trip to Paris, and on the way learned what it would take to create a trunk or suitcase that would be attractive, and helpful, for the wealthy. He began creating his own suitcases and luggage, starting the Louis Vuitton Company. By keeping watch on the trends, and creating luggage and handbags that were attractive and useful, Louis Vuitton has managed to not only survive, but to thrive, in the dangerous fashion industry.

Dressing For My Figure

Ruby Shaw
In general terms there are four common body shapes for women. The Pear Shape, the Apple Shape, the Hourglass shape and the triangle shape. In this article we are going to look at how to dress the pear shaped figure.

The pear shape comes from the smaller upper body and slightly fuller lower body. Where the figure generally has a slender neck, narrow shoulders and back with smaller breasts, it is met with curvy hips larger bottom and fuller thighs to give it the pear shape.

Dressing My Pear Shape.

For the pear shaped figure it is best to raise the attention to your upper body with bright colours on top and darker shades below the waist. You want people to be focused on the face and shoulders, enhancing a larger bust and show off that defined waist.

Your bottom half is slightly larger than your top, you can wear slightly looser fitting clothes on top without any problem. However, fitted tops look great on you as well. Blouses with a lot of detailing, tops in all sorts of prints with lighter and brighter colours, or textured fabrics are what you want to look for in your tops. This will help balance your lower half.

Look for tops that give you a wider chest look such as necklines that are scooped, vd, squared or rounded this will help draw attention to your face. Jeans that are flared or with a wider leg this will help hide those wider thighs and stay away from tight skirts they will only show every curve or bump and tapered jeans are a definite no, no.

A-line skirts always look good on the pear shaped body and you can go for the straight leg jeans with a thin heel for the slimmer leg look, but be careful to avoid chunky shoes. Stick to wrap around dresses and empire waists this will help blend in the hip line.

NYC Fashion Week

Erika Chloe
It is fall fashion week in NYC and behind all the glitz, celebrities and drama, there was a lot of work to be done on my end. As you may already know, I own and operate a Fashion Consultant firm called My Image Expert www.MyImageExpert.com. I am also responsible for a custom couture fashion collection that I both design and produce in New York City. That said, sometimes I am called upon by other designers (much bigger then myself - literally) to fulfil last minute designs. Since my clothing collection is made locally, you can imagine all the calls I received for fashion week regarding last minute requests. Now that the week is just about over, I can finally settle in an share my thoughts about an incident that occurred a few days ago.

I was invited to be a guest blogger on a fashion related web site, much like this one. With the exchange of several e-mails, one of the contributors asked me to name my favorite trends for Summer/Spring 09. Anybody that knows me, knows I tend to over analyze things and it usually doesn't take much to get my wheels spinning. After the smoke cleared, I decided to share my thoughts regarding Summer and Spring trends for 2009 with the fashion network.

Spring/Summer 09 will be very a very interesting time for fashion. Fashion designers gather inspiration for their collection up to two years ahead of time. This includes the entire process from inception to completion. Inception includes the original concept for the garment including: color, fabric and style details that are usually represented in sketch form. Completion includes the delivery date that these garments are actually shipped the vendor or store supplier for retail. At this time, the consumer can actually buy and wear the garment.

Spring/Summer 09 trends were forecast several months before Spring/Summer 08! So in theory, the trends were created just before the majority of the credit crunch hit retail stores and consumers. By now, everyone knows that retail sales continue to take a beating due to the current condition of the economy. This beating has directly affected the designers and the companies they work for. Most of these companies manufacturer their own garments once the concepts, details, and samples are designed. The department store buyer will look at these manufactured samples and decide if they want to carry them in their stores. As we speak, buyers are working with designers and manufacturer samples for Spring/Summer 2010.

With that being said, this years Spring/Summer 09 trends, that are already available to consumers in retail stores, do not reflect the current credit crunch that has affected our economy. When the economy is bad, fashion trends tend to reveal the ramifications. Colors start to inherit neutral and basic tones like: brown, grey, cream and navy. This is because fashion colors (the trendy colors of the moment) are more expensive to manufacturer. In a bad economy, fabrics become less feminine and luxurious. Manufacturers use basic blends of cotton, wool and silk while avoiding intricate details like embellishments, sequins, leather, glitter and flaps. This helps to lower the overall price that a consumer will pay for such a garment. Hemlines tend to shrink in a bad economy. The mini skirt was first developed and designed by Mary Quant in the 1960's while in the midst of an economic recession. Less fabric is cheaper and lets face it, a mini skirt leaves little to the imagination!

This will be the first time in history when being fashionable is out of fashion! The collections that walked down the runway in September's Spring Fashion week were not designed for the frugal female or an economy on the verge of a recession. They were designed and created for the luxurious lady who loves to splurge on novelty items. When Spring 09 hits the stores many months after fashion week, people will simply pass up the designer brands and head to discount stores to buy what they can afford.

By now, my reply to your requirement is a bit extensive. I have to stop myself as I could go on for hours! I have decided to list my favorite trends in a more effective way that seems reasonable due to the economy and my above acclamations. It is possible to spend less and look the best! Many high-end designers have developed collections for discount stores like Target, H&M, and Payless. The best part about it is that no one ever has to know where you got it from! Here a few of my favorite high-end designers offering exclusive trendy and affordable collections. The trend for Spring/Summer 09 is to have the designers runway look at a fraction of the cost.

Fashion Advice For 2010

Richard Whiteman
If you're looking for bold fashion advice, then look back to the sixties, the era of freedom and liberation. That was perhaps the era of greater social change than any era since. The world as we know it today would not be here if not for the sixties.

From the Civil Rights Movement to Women's liberation, the 60s paved the way. This era of liberation even spread to the fashion industry. No other lasting item of apparel proves this point more than the mini skirt.

Different people spell it differently, but the mini-skirt, miniskirt or mini skirt remains the same: it is short and sexy and only for the young and the bold. A French fashion label was the first to lift the hemline above the knees in 1964.

For some reason, though, it took a 1966 version of the skirt to make it catch on. It was the even higher hemlined Chelsea style skirt that grabbed the world's attention.

After that, the miniskirt took the world by storm. This bold new look, combined with the fact that the invention of pantyhose liberated women from girdles, was embraced by youthful women with unprecedented passion. In the blink of an eye, they were being seen everywhere in all the major fashion capitals of the world.

Since the sixties, mini-skirts have waxed and waned in popularity, but have never really gone out of style. They are made from every conceivable fabric and worn for every occasion. The casual denim version is perhaps the most popular, but it's not unheard of for a girl to choose to wear a tight see-through lycra mini or a sexy schoolgirl mini.

If you're looking for fearless fashion advice, take it from the sixties. The sixties told us to do our own thing and "if it feels good, do it." Don't listen to anybody else, girls - do what you want!

Fashion Advice That Anyone Can Afford

Mini skirt, mini-skirt or miniskirt - spell it as you like it is the same thing: short, sassy and sexy. The mini skirt made its debut in 1964 when a French fashion house made the bold move of moving the hemline of skirts up above the knee.

Then a British designer took her cue from them and pushed the limits even further with the Chelsea style skirt. That was in 1966.

After that, the miniskirt ruled the fashion world. Some thanks has to be given to the inventors of the pantyhose, because without that, there may never have been a mini. At any rate, it took off like a rocket and it wasn't long before every woman young enough to get away with it was wearing a mini skirt in the clubs and on the streets of every major city.

The casual denim version is perhaps the most popular, but it's not unheard of for a girl to choose to wear a tight see-through lycra mini or a sexy schoolgirl mini.

So what is the best fashion advice for the fearless fashionista? Don't take anyone's advice. The message of the sixties was: "do your own thing." Take it to heart, ladies and show the world what you've got!

Putting The Ease In Tease

Women removing their clothes for a bit of spice is nothing new, since clothes went on people have enjoyed watching them come off. However, women have not been the target audience of choice since it has normally been females who strip, but something has been occurring over the last couple of years that is altering all of that. Neo Burlesque as it is being branded has taken the art of seduction and teasing into the mainstream and everyone loves it particularly women.

Burlesque has been described as the tease over the strip and maybe this is why women love it so much, it takes the concept of taking your costume off away from seedy venues and red light districts and places it firmly in theatre and art. Although most of the clothes are removed, not all, it is a show rather than just a woman getting her clothes off and it involves accessories, props and glamour everything a girl loves.

Embracing the Female Form

Burlesque in not an art form that is just for skinny young things either, knockout curves and a bit of bawdiness make the show all the more exciting! Although it involves girls stripping to their smalls, normally a g string and some fantastically sparkly pasties, it is about girl power and the girls being on top.

Performers like Dita Von Teese and Miss Dirty Martini are two examples of females who in spite of their opposite figures delight crowds with their sensual ways. Miss Von Teese has a tiny hour glass shape and is a big fan of corsetry and tight lacing while Miss Martini has car crash curves that a Rubens model would be proud of! But that is the joy of burlesque it celebrates all types of woman because it is about embracing sexuality and femininity, exuding confidence and appreciating the girly body.

The At Home Show

You don't need to be a size six or a professional star to enjoy the fun of burlesque just a sense of humour and some really wonderful lingerie! Why not give it a try at home?, first set the scene why not scatter rose petals around the room, mood lighting goes without saying and a bit of perfume hanging in the air creates the prefect boudoir atmosphere. Then the all important music, pick something that makes you feel sexy and that you can dance to!

Onto the fun stuff! Time to pick your lingerie, you should wear something that makes you feel really sexy whether that is pasties and a thong or a simple camisole! Then you need the covering outfit something luxurious that you can take off easily and of course lots of accessories including gloves and feather boas. As far as make up and hair go you can go retro like many of the burlesque stars with a slick of red lipstick and some soft curls or you can simply wear your favourite Saturday night combo that makes you feel brazen and up for some fun!

High Street Fashion

The holiday starts when you start looking for clothes for it. Floaty Kaftans, bright bikinis, jewelled sandals, all a million miles away from the rain and cold of winter, all taking you one step closer to pure white beaches and turquoise seas. Of course, you don't want to blow your holiday budget on a bikini, no matter how gorgeous it is, and it can be difficult to find exactly what you want to wear for the right price.

There are some good options on the high-street to help you solve this problem. TopShop, Warehouse, Miss Selfridge, Republic, all offer good quality clothes at reasonable prices so that whatever cut, colour and price you're looking for there'll almost certainly be something for you. Of course, it can be frustrating to have to trek from shop to shop to find something you want.

One way to avoid this tedious problem is to go to a store like New Look which has it all under one roof. Swim-suits, sandals, jewellery, shoes, bags; you can find it all in one place and avoid having to fight your way through endless shops. You can also avoid too much damage to your bank-account: New Look's products are reasonably priced and there are often good sales on so you can find yourself a real bargain.

Another potential creator of stress on a shopping trip is having to drag screaming kids or a sulky husband around with you. New Look has ranges for men, women, teens and children meaning they'll have something to occupy themselves whilst you get on with the important job of finding yourself something gorgeous. New Look has a ?basics? range ? plain colours, simple designs - which is accompanied by more edgy, fashion pieces so that you can mix-and-match for that perfect outfit.

If you're looking for something up-to-date and bang on trend that won't break the bank New Look can also help. They often have a ?get the look? section which collects various pieces grouped around a particular theme (military, bohemian, gothic) so that you can keep up with the latest fashions without having to sacrifice your overdraft.

Of particular note is New Look's range of shoes. For a high street store that doesn't focus only on shoes it is impressive: boots, pumps, high-heels, trainers whatever you want they've probably got it. They also do wide-fit shoes in the same funky styles for those who don't want to sacrifice fashion for comfort.

Key Trends For Summer Fashion

Josef Kazan
Look great this season by knowing what's hot and what's not. Since pink hit at the fashion shows of Paris and Milan last year, pastel colours for men are still very popular. Bear in mind that lighter summery colours can give traditional cuts a new chic and a splash of the out-of-the-ordinary. Here's a quick guide.

As well as pinks, beiges and other pastel colours, men should still remember to think about wearing safer, more traditional colours such as caramel, khaki and olive, keeping the look neutral for trousers and shorts. Classic chic is rarely going to be a miss in the fashion department. Traditional black, and the ever elegant white, are also still stylish.

As for shirts and pants, fitted sheer shirts, along with bold, button-down shirts in juxtaposing patterns are very in fashion. It's wise to wear these in light mauves and blues, to add a cooler, lighter feel to harder lines. Baggier, and looser style trousers, are a fave this summer as well, and look great with the right pair of men's sandals.

Though it might seem peculiar, many designers have brought short-shorts into men's work wear. The style blends business man and little school boy. It's been a hit with the designer Salvatore Ferragamo, and is likely to make an impression, if that's what you want to do.

Another statement making look that has been popular for a while is patent leather. Leather jackets for wearing to parties and dinners at night, will definitely help you set yourself apart from the more common sporty vibe among men in summer. A look back to seventies punk rock chic, tread carefully here. You need to make sure it works for you.

Accessories are as popular among fashion designers for men as they are among those for women. Plaid accessories were big for Spring last year, whether in the form of belts, shoes or flat caps. They're still in this year, along with satchel school boy bags and even bow ties.

As for trends to avoid in the summer season, just make sure that if you do wear short-suits and patent leather pants, you do so with a lot of though. Above all, it's about slavishly following catwalk trends to the detriment of your elegance. Pick and choose from in style items, but make sure you opt for what flatters, instead of what you think will make you look fashionable.

If you're wondering where to look for men's clothes, both stylish and not too expensive, it would be advisable to go to New Look's website. As well as a really wide selection of summer wear, New Look also has new and exclusive offers. Right now, for example, they are providing summer shirts, in grid, denim and checked, at reduced prices

Must Have Mens Clothing Fashion

With designers looking to travel and the high seas this summer season, the nautical trend is everywhere. You cannot have missed this look on the high street, or on the catwalks, and if you want to incorporate this fresh summer look, then stripes are key. Go for navy, white, or red, all classic and versatile colour options.

Alongside the nautical and travel trends, this summer sees the return of the prep. Think American Ivy League college look and you get the idea. Your key pieces are, of course, the chino, as well as baseball jackets, casual summer knits in pastel shades, polo shirts and sports jackets and blazers. Mix and match for a smart casual summer feel.

You can use some of your preppy American college key pieces to tie in to that other big trend for the summer, the vintage travel theme. By vintage we mean fashion trends from the 20s and 30s when well bred rich kids travelled the Med and Riviera through the summer.

Footwear for the summer looks to the past for inspiration and reinvents some classic styles. As well a the return of the tennis show, the deck shoe is also back and works so well with the nautical and travel trends. Look out for woven leather finishes that give the deck shoe a fresh twist.

No shoes say summer holiday more than the espadrille and this year you will not be able to get away from them. All over the high street right now, with Toms being a key brand, you really have a limitless choice when it comes to colours and canvas print finishes.

Shorts take on a new cut this summer. As well as the classic short shorts for those who dare to bare, look out for the skinny short. These are relatively long and reach down to the knee, often with a turn up detail and are great for that all American look as they can be dressed up or dressed down.

If you want to incorporate the preppy look this summer then your shirts need to be of the polo variety, or they need to be pastel, dirty bleached and crisp. The other key shirt trend is for tartan and check, which is another rehashing of the 90s grunge look.

Cover up for summer with the perfect hat. With the vintage travel theme in mind, opt for one of the classics, the panama or the fedora. Keep the colour light and the fabric natural. Alternatively the peaked newsboy hat is back, and the 80s ska aesthetic means the return of the pork pie too.
